Safety First
Immediately after a car accident, do everything you can to ensure the safety of yourself and anyone else involved in the accident. If possible, pull your car over to a safe area and call 911 if anyone is hurt or trapped in their vehicle.
Exchange Information
Exchange information with anyone else involved in the accident. This should include drivers’ license numbers, province of residence, license plate number, insurance details and contact info of other drivers. You should also collect the names and contact information of passengers and anyone else involved in the accident (cyclists or pedestrians involved and witnesses).
Take Photos
Take pictures of the scene of the accident including any vehicles involved, any road signs nearby, and any dangerous obstacles or notable road conditions that may have contributed to the accident.
Write Everything Down
It is important to write down everything that you remember about the accident as soon as you can. You may think you won’t need to write it down, but it is very easy to forget little details that may not seem important but actually have a bearing on your case. Write down the date and time of the accident, what the weather was like, recount the exact events leading up to the accident, what it was like during the accident, and what you did afterwards.
See a Doctor
After your accident, it is important that you get checked out by a medical professional, even if you think your injuries are very minor or nonexistent. Many doctors are now conducting some visits online through video call, so if you are not severely injured and would prefer an online meeting, this may be a better option for you.
Talk to a Lawyer
Talk to a personal injury lawyer as soon as you can after the accident occurs. This will allow you to understand what the next steps are in terms of dealing with ICBC and finding out whether or not you are owed compensation.
At Hoogbruin and Company, we offer Consultation and only charge you for our services if you win your case. We will help identify whether you are entitled to compensation and if so how much and we will deal with ICBC on your behalf.
